Apple support sucks

Apple support sucks

I got my MacBook Pro 5 months ago and I really like it but sometimes (2-3 times a day) it gives a high-pitched buzzing sound which is really annoying (and I'm not the only one - see here). Useuaally I can adjust the display angle a bit and it goes away, but I haven't been able to find anything on apple's support pages untill today where i found this article. The article ask me to call AppleCare if I have this problem and so I did.

The girl I talked to was very kind, but after she searched into the issue she informed me that she couldn't do anything because my AppleCare was expired after 90 days and even though this is clearly covered through the one year warrenty, she said that the only thing I could do was to take it to the nearest apple support center which is 3 hours drive away and ask them to listen to the sound.

This is clearly not acceptable - I should spend one day in the car and pay 150 USD in gas and bridge toll!

Now I am really pissed with Apple!

Happy Camper

Happy Camper

After having had the MacBook Pro for I am very satisfied by doing the swich. The main issues about the MacBook Pro is:

* The heat - this computer really put my soul on fire (and my lab)
* Battery life time. From my Sony I was use to 6-8 hours, but the MacBook pro is typically 2-3 hours.
* Visio application - I really miss this application from Windows
* Minor Word problems. Some Amplex templates makes my word (and sometimes OS X) crash.

I really, really like:
* Spotlight - this is soo much better than Google Desktop and a lot faster
* Entourage is much better and faster than MS OutLook
* iPhotos is iTunes for images and a great program
* All movie programs, which is far beyond what you get for Windows

So, I do not miss the Windows world - except the right mouse button. I really do not get why I have to Ctrl-click to do additional stuff!

back on track

back on track

After doing an almost "all-nighter", I finally got updated the OS X from the DVD's that was delivered with the computer, and now everything seem to be working fine.

The only thing I lost was the 2 hours of editing a document about energy savings :-(

So now I can continue redoing the editing and to get my old emails restored from Outlook 2003.

My #€%&/@ macPro

My #€%&/@ macPro

So, now I got most of my software installed. Entourage is working and syncronizing against the company Exchange server and I got most of my files transferred, so everyting seem fine...

... but then I rebooted the computer and just after the finder is up and running, the MacBook completely locks up. I can't even Ctrl+Eject or anything. Nothing to do. Tried to reboot in all different ways Apple's support page suggested and I even reset the RAM etc.

Only one thing to do - reinstall the OS X!!!

The difference between a Windows XP and OS X - OS X has greater colors when the computer completely locks up!!!

Did I make the wrong choice by doing the switch - the next weeks will show, but for now it doesn't look great.

Got my MacBook Pro

Got my MacBook Pro

Sweeet! I just got my Mac today - at 11:23 the DHL guy dropped it off and I unwrapped it, and it is for sure a fine looking gadget.

I powered it up and got it up n' running, but it took me a while to get the WLAN to work with encryption.

I brought it home and started to install the useual programs and all worked fine even though most was for the PowerPC and not for the new Intel Dual Core processor. The speed is great for these applications and everything works - except the Cisco VPN.

I got a -51 error which said that it couldn't start when there was not connection to the internet, but I was online. I searched Cisco useless site but it wasn't possible to find anything. After googling I found that Cisco had a new version of their VPN client (4.9.00 (0050)) that should be universal binary. It was impossible to find it on the cisco homepage for download so I ended up by finding it on some UCLA website and then I could download it. This works fine and now I am online on our exchange server.

Now I started to download all files from my sony PC and this is a problem. I got my Sony PC mounted, but the MacBook Pro keeps stalling and I have to reboot. Funny how they all say that you should do the switch so you shouldn't reboot.

Waiting for my MacBook Pro

Waiting for my MacBook Pro

I am waiting and waiting - so I checkked my account at the Apple Store to see if there was anything new.

I was supprised to see, that they just changed the delivery time to March 12th, 2006 - I was sad!

But then one hour later I got an email explaining me that I would get a 2.0 GHz insted of the 1.83GHz I ordered - that was nice. And they also promised to ship by February 21th - that was even better.

Ready for the switch

Ready for the switch

I got my first IBM PC back in 1982 - I got the IBM PC number three which come to Denmark. I have tried almost anything on a PC and have been running since IBM DOS 1.0 and all the way to Windows XP - including GEM (a graphical user interface which was out before Windows).

I use to laugh at people running on a Macintosh, but now I am so fed up with the Windows user interface, the operating system that often stall's my PC for 10-15 minutes etc.

So yesterday I saw Steve Job's keynote where he presented the MacBook Pro and I'm up for it. I have already been flirting with an iMac running OS X and I also once had a NeXT Station, so I am not complete novice on the field, but shifting the laptop which I use 17 hours a day is a big step for me. Last night I tested to see if Entourage (the OSX version of Outlook) could import my emails (7GB) and it didn't, but I bought a $10 tool, which could convert the emails for me and I worked out beautifully. Then I set up the Cisco VPN connection to work and that also went fine - I even managed to set up a printer on work to my default printer. The last thing was to try to see if I could read the powerpoints and word documents I have from work and that also seemed fine.

So, I'm ready and I just ordered the brand new MacBook Pro from the Apple Store and I got a confirmation email saying 5 weeks of delivery time - this is so exciting!!!
